Australian voter attitudes toward Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) in 2019.
VoteCompass methodology
- Run by VoxPop Labs, affiliated with the University of Melbourne.
- Respondent answers were gathered online during the May 2019 Australian Federal Election campaign.
- Respondents completed the VoteCompass online questionnaire to receive a report summarising their general position relative to the published policies of the major political parties.
- Question asked: "Terminally ill patients should be able to end their own lives with medical assistance."
Strongly disagree | Somewhat disagree | Neutral | Somewhat agree | Strongly agree | Don’t know.
- Total N = 544,494.
- Responses were analysed by State/Territory, and by electoral District (lower house seats) within each State/Territory.
- Vote “By lower house first preference” is the political party the respondent intended to give, or gave, their first preference to in the House of Representatives at the 2019 federal election.
- Religion is the stated religious affiliation of the respondent.
Quality comparison – AES 2019
The VoteCompass results were compared with the Australian Election Study 2019.
- Study run via Australian National University in Canberra.
- Same question wording as VoteCompass.
- Data collected immediately after the May 2019 Australian Federal Election.
- Blended online/offline, stratified formal sampling with final sample weighting to Australian Bureau of Statistics demographics.
- Total N = 2,179.
