South Australia says YES to Voluntary Assisted Dying
A new analysis of data collected in the 2019 Vote Compass survey shows that voters in every South Australian state electorate overwhelmingly support voluntary assisted dying (VAD) laws. The data also shows majority support among conservative voters and those with religious beliefs.
Over 42,000 people in South Australia responded to the statement "Terminally ill patients should be able to end their own lives with medical assistance."
In South Australia, the levels of support in individual electorates ranged from 75% to 82%.
The overall support for VAD in South Australia was 79% with only 9% opposed.
The data also demonstrates the levels of support by political persuasion and religious faith.
The results are striking:
- There is overwhelming support across the political spectrum, from Greens (84%), Labor (78%) and Coalition (69%), to minor party and independents (67%).
- Those supporting VAD laws include more than three quarters of Catholics (76%), and more than four out of five Anglicans (82%) and non-Christian faiths (82%). Among voters with no religion there is 94% support.
A voluntary assisted dying bill is currently being debated in the SA Parliament.
Any MP who votes against the SA VAD Bill cannot claim to be representing the wishes of their electorate.
